MORAINE — Police are continuing to hunt for three men who robbed the Walmart store here early Tuesday, Oct. 20.

The robbery occurred at 12:23 a.m. when a man who’d been waiting outside the 1701 W. Dorothy Lane store forced his way inside as an employee left for the night, said police Sgt. Chris Selby.

Once inside, Selby said the suspect grabbed an employee and at gunpoint forced him to summon the manager. In the meantime, two more male suspects entered the store and locked the door behind them, Selby said.

The robbers then led the four employees to the store’s service desk, forced them to pull out money and then made the employees lay on the floor, the sergeant said.

Once they left the store, the robbers moved to a neighboring business, climbed into a silver vehicle and fled, Selby said, adding that one suspect displayed a gun during the robbery.

The store has been hit by violent crime before. In December 2008, a woman was robbed and shot in the abdomen while wheeling her shopping cart to her car. The woman was hospitalized, but later released.

But on Tuesday, Selby said the store has upgraded its security, including adding more than 100 surveillance cameras.

“This is something that could have happened anywhere,” he said. “It’s not something Walmart related.”

Officials with Walmart could not immediately be reached for comment.
