HAMILTON — Dr. R. Scott Blankenburg turned himself into the sheriff’s office today Feb. 15, at about 7:40 a.m. to be transported to prison. The pediatrician, who practiced on Nilles Road in Fairfield, will serve 13 years behind bars for drug and sex crimes involving minors.
The 54-year-old doctor puffed on a cigarette and hugged family members as he walked in heavy snowfall from the parking lot on Hanover Street to the jail’s lobby. He clutched prescription bottles and a large envelope. At his side was one was his defense attorneys, Jack Garretson.
After Scott Blankenburg was taken to the jail area, Garretson talked with family members. He said they had no comment and all declined an opportunity to speak.
Last month, Scott Blankenburg pleaded guilty to compelling prostitution, two counts of bribery, pandering sexually oriented material involving a minor, illegal use of a minor in nudity-oriented material, two counts of unlawful sexual conduct with a minor and complicity to deception to obtain a dangerous drug. One of the charges involved a former patient.
He was sentenced by Butler County Common Pleas Judge Noah Powers to prison, but was given a stay until 8 a.m. today to close up his practice, and the practice of his twin brother, Mark, which once operated on F Street in Hamilton.
Mark Blankenburg was sentenced to 21 to 27 years in prison for molesting three former patients, and for other charges stemming from money and drugs he gave the victims for years to keep quiet. He was found guilty in October after a jury trial.
“He is fully aware of what he has to do and he is going to do it,” Garretson said Friday.
Mark Blankenburg remains housed at the Butler County Jail. He is scheduled to stand trial in May on multiple child pornography charges that were severed form the charges in the first case.
Butler County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Anthony Dwyer said it is possible the brothers could be housed in the same jail pod, allowing for them to have contact.
