VANDALIA — A kidnapping suspect from the Toledo area was arrested by officers of the Regional Emergency Response Team in the parking lot of a Super 8 motel on National Road in Vandalia early Tuesday morning, June 23, according to Lt. Dan Swafford of the Vandalia police.

Swafford said police from the Toledo area put out an alert early Tuesday morning warning that a high risk felon wanted for kidnapping in northern Ohio was believed to be heading toward Dayton. The Toledo warning included a description of the man’s pick-up truck, and Swafford said a Vandalia patrol officer spotted the truck in the motel parking lot.

Because the suspect was listed as armed and dangerous, Swafford said Vandalia called for assistance from the Regional Emergency Response Team made up of officers from Beavercreek, Fairborn, Huber Heights and Vandalia who are trained in special weapons and tactics.

The team evacuated known motel guests staying in rooms near where the truck was parked, and during the evacuation officers realized someone was sleeping under blankets inside the truck.

Members of the team approached the truck and took the suspect into custody without incident at 5:37 a.m., Swafford said.

The arrested man was identified as Michael Jaros, 38. Swafford said he believed Jaros was from the Toledo area but did not know for sure.
