LEBANON — A 16-year-old Clearcreek Twp. boy was ordered on Monday, Dec. 7, to stay home, at work or with his parents though the holidays as part of punishment for his part in the August incident that prompted evacuation of Springboro city offices because of an alleged pipe bomb.

During a hearing in Warren County Juvenile Court, Judge Michael Powell also ordered the boy to pay $300 in fines and costs, and suspended his driver’s license through Feb. 5.

“I know I made a mistake,” the boy said during the hearing. “It won’t happen again.”

The sentencing concludes a case, involving two Fenwick High School soccer players, that prompted an evacuation Aug. 5 of temporary city offices, adjoining offices and a Springboro home after Springboro police found what they believed to be a pipe bomb during a search of a 17-year-old Springboro boy’s backpack at the police department.

The case began earlier that night, when police noticed a decorative concrete ball broken from landscaping in a Settlers Walk neighborhood and smoke bombs set off nearby and in adjoining woods.

No one was injured.

Analysis of the detonated device failed to find evidence of low-grade explosives.

The Clearcreek boy was brought to the police station by his parents. In October, he admitted to juvenile charges of criminal damaging, obstructing official business and a curfew violation.

Last week, the Springboro boy was ordered to serve 24 hours of community service, pay a $250 fine, remain on house arrest for juvenile charges of attempted possession of an alleged pipe bomb, obstructing official business, criminal mischief and placing injurious materials in the road. His driver’s license was suspended for two months and he was credited for six days spent in juvenile detention.

During sentencing, Powell suspended 30 days in detention in both cases.
