WEST CHESTER TWP. — Two Lakota West juniors have turned themselves in on charges they face related to a fight at the school less than 24 hours after a classmate was stabbed to death.
The students, a 16-year-old and a 17-year-old turned themselves in to the West Chester Twp. Police Department at approximately 8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 15. They are facing one count each of felonious assault for allegedly jumping another student Friday morning, Sept. 11.
Police have said they believe the fight Friday morning at the school is connected to the fatal stabbing on Thursday, Sept. 10 of 15-year-old Amber Robinson.
Police said the assault charges are considered felonies because of the extent of the injuries the 17-year-old victim suffered during the unprovoked attack, which included a broken jaw and other facial injuries.
The juveniles are being held in the Butler County Juvenile Detention Center, according to Sgt. Joe Gutman, of the West Chester Twp. Police Department.
Meanwhile, testimony from witnesses and police officials about Robinson’s death was heard Tuesday in Butler County Area III Court in West Chester.
Robinson was apparently was walking with her father away from a fight when she was fatally stabbed last week.
Khrendon D. Gray, 18, of Meadowglen Drive in Springfield Twp., is charged with murder in the death of Lakota West High School sophomore Amber Robinson, 15. He is being held on $1 million bond in the Butler County Jail. He appeared before Butler County Area III Court Judge Dan Haughey Tuesday, where his case was bound over to a Butler County grand jury.
“She was walking up the street,” said one witness, who testified during the preliminary hearing in Butler County Area III Court Tuesday. “And she was talking to her father.”
The witness said Gray “ran out there and punched her and stabbed her, and that was the end of it.”
The witness said he was standing five feet away when Gray allegedly stabbed Robinson in the back with a black, curved knife, then dropped the knife and ran.
Robinson died from those wounds suffered while she was in the area of a group of 20 to 25 people involved in a large fight at the North Pointe Townhomes Thursday evening, Sept. 10.
Police responded to the apartment complex just before 8:15 p.m. to find Robinson lying in the middle of Triangle Drive at West Wind Court with a stab wound. She bled to death after the knife’s blade pierced her heart, according to Butler County Coroner Dr. Richard Burkhardt. Burkhardt said an autopsy revealed Robinson suffered no other injuries.
Because of the size of the crowd, officers from other agencies were called to help get the situation under control, police said.
Police have charged two suspects in connection with Robinson’s death after interviewing witnesses to Thursday’s incident.
In addition to Gray, a 17-year-old male from Forest Park was arrested Saturday and charged with one count of complicity to murder, a first-degree felony. He is due in juvenile court next week.
West Chester police Chief Erik Niehaus said the 17-year-old allegedly handed Gray the knife used to stab Robinson.
Robinson’s parents said they believe their daughter was attempting to break up the fight when she was stabbed. However, other witnesses say Robinson may have been more directly involved.
West Chester Twp police Detective James Thomas, the lead investigator in the case, said Tuesday preliminary interviews with witnesses show Robinson was not directly involved, and that she was breaking up the fight.
Thomas said Gray told him he was in the area when the fight occurred.
“However, he denied any involvement as far as physically fighting with anybody,” Thomas testified.
Then Gray asked to speak with an attorney, Thomas said.
Thomas said two knives have been collected as evidence. One was recovered at a nearby apartment, and another was recovered from Gray’s residence. Thomas said the knives are being tested, and that he did not know whether blood was found on the knives or whether one of the knives in question was the weapon used to stab Robinson.
Thomas said Robinson’s clothing, blood found at the scene and blood found at a West Wind Court residence were collected by police, and that swabs of Gray’s arms, fingers and hands were taken.
