XENIA — Police have charged a Cleveland man with attempted murder in a shooting early Sunday morning, Sept. 5, near Hotie’s Bar, 333 E. Main St.
Gregory T. Smith, 21, was charged Tuesday with first-degree felony attempted murder. He is being held on $100,000 bond.
Smith was arrested in Kettering on Monday for a parole violation on an aggravated robbery charge.
Just before 2 a.m. Sunday, officers were investigating a fight in the area of North Leach Street when they heard shots.
Xenia police officers found William Grundy, 33, in the parking lot of the bar. He had been shot multiple times in the right side of the chest and lower-right abdomen. Police said the suspect fled before they arrived.
There was a large crowd in the parking lot when the shooting occurred.
After talking to witnesses, Xenia police Capt. Scott Anger said the department determined the suspect’s identity, found out about the parole violation and brought Smith to the Greene County Jail at 11:22 p.m. Monday.
Grundy, a Xenia resident, was taken to Miami Valley Hospital by the Xenia Fire Department. Anger said Grundy has been released and is “fortunate to have survived.”
Police said Smith, originally from Cleveland, stays at a few residences throughout the Miami Valley, including one in Kettering.
