TROTWOOD — An 18-year-old man was shot multiple times but received no life-threatening injuries when he apparently tried to rob someone selling drugs Sunday afternoon, according to Det. Steve Derringer of the Trotwood police.

About 4:45 p.m. Sunday, the 18-year-old appeared to be buying drugs from a man in the parking lot of the Auto Zone store at 4044 Salem Ave., Derringer said. The young man then tried to rob the person selling drugs.

“It seems to be some kind of drug transaction gone bad,” Derringer said.

At some point, the person or persons selling drugs opened fire on the would-be robber as he jumped into his car and tried to flee the scene. The man was hit several times, and evidence technicians later found 14 bullet holes in the car.

The fleeing man stopped to seek help at a residence several blocks away from the scene of the shooting, and police caught up with him there. Derringer said a Trotwood ambulance took the man to Miami Valley Hospital for treatment of injuries that did not appear to be life threatening.

Derringer said the man’s name has not been released because he has not been formally charged. The detective said Trotwood investigators believe they know the identities of the alleged drug dealers involved in the shooting, but they had not been found as of Monday morning.
