A Troy man convicted of rape and other sex-related crimes involving two teen girls was sentenced Monday to 61 years in prison by a Miami County judge who called the behavior “despicable.”
Charles D. Hilbert, 46, pleaded no contest in August to 23 felonies including 11 rape counts, one sexual battery count and nine counts of either pandering obscenity or illegal use of a minor in nudity oriented material. He was found guilty in Common Pleas Court.
All of the charges but one involved one of the girls, who was age 13 to almost 18 during the abuse. The sexual battery charge involved a second teen.
The girl abused for five years said Hilbert would threaten her and tell her that, if she told about the abuse, he’d lie about her so she’d have to go to jail with him. She said she doesn’t want Hilbert to get out of jail “because I’m afraid he’d do something to hurt somebody else.”
Hilbert, who did not have a prior criminal record, said he wanted to apologize for his actions. “Mere words cannot apologize for what I’ve done wrong,” he said.
If the maximum sentence were imposed for each offense, Hilbert could have been sentenced to more than 200 years. Judge Robert Lindeman sentenced him to a series of concurrent and consecutive terms totaling the 61 years.
“To me words cannot describe how terrible your behavior has been … It is despicable,” Lindeman said.
