LOS ANGELES — A Dayton-area man wanted on an accusation that he tried to have oral sex with a 15-year-old girl was apprehended Friday, Nov. 13, in Los Angeles, Calif., the U.S. Marshals Service said.
Lawrence W. Yancey, convicted in Montgomery County in 2004 of unlawful sexual conduct with a minor, was arrested at a homeless shelter, the Marshals Service said in a statement released Friday.
Yancey, who was 37 at the time of the alleged offense, is to appear before a federal magistrate in Los Angeles before being extradited to Ohio.
He fled the Dayton area after the attempted sexual contact with the teen in June, according to the marshals service, Cathy Jones, acting U.S. Marshal for the Southern District of Ohio, and Montgomery County Sheriff Phil Plummer.
Authorities learned he was headed to Los Angeles, according to the marshals service, which violated the conditions of his sex offender registration and triggered the involvement of the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Sex Offender Registration Unit.
Plummer’s office and the marshals service began investigating Yancey in September for violating the Adam Walsh Act, which makes travel to new jurisdictions to avoid registration a federal violation.
The marshals service in Dayton secured a federal arrest warrant, contacted the marshals service in Los Angeles and informed them Yancey was going to several homeless shelters and receiving assistance from two L.A. County relief organizations.
Yancey’s criminal history includes assault, domestic violence, arson, robbery and drug charges, according to Jones’ and Plummer’s offices.
