DAYTON — A 22-year-old woman is said to be in stable condition today, June 15, after she was shot once in the chest at an apartment in the 200 block of Niagara Avenue.

The shooting right now is not being viewed as random because police found suspected marijuana, which appeared to be packaged for sale, in the apartment, Dayton Lt. Brian Johns said.

One of two men taken into custody shortly after the shooting has been arrested on an outstanding warrant and because police believe he was in possession of drugs, Johns said.

The other man has not been formally arrested or charged.

The woman, whose name was not immediately made public, called police about 4:30 p.m. to say she had been shot, Johns said. Police arriving at the apartment at 200 Niagara Ave. heard yelling inside and had to force their way into the unit, he said.

Once inside, police found the woman had been shot in her chest, Johns said, and they also found 15 to 20 bags of suspected marijuana that appeared to have been packaged for sale.

The woman told police she heard a knock at the door, opened it and was hit by one of three gunshots, Johns said.

The woman lives there with her boyfriend, but the incident did not appear to be domestic in nature and neither man in custody is believed to her boyfriend, Johns said.

She was taken to a hospital where she was listed in stable condition suffering from a non life-threatening wound.
