If you’re looking to satisfy a hungry (and thirsty) crowd at your Super Bowl party, the Best of Dayton 2017 awards stand ready to help guide your winning strategy.
This year’s winner in the “Best Wings” category was Bunkers Sports Bar & Grill at 893 E. National Road in Vandalia.
We confirmed that Bunkers will be selling their wings to go on Super Bowl Sunday, but the sports bar strongly recommends placing your order at least 24 hours in advance. The second-place and third-place winners for best wings were Lock 27 Brewing in Dayton/Centerville and Hairless Hare Brewery in Vandalia.
This year’s winner (Pa’s Pork) and runner-up (Smokin’ Barrels) in the “Best BBQ” category were food trucks, making carryout problematic, but the third-place winner (and top vote-getter in 2016) was City Barbecue, which has an extensive catering menu and serves up specialties to go.
Our “Best Pizza” winner was Old Scratch Pizza at 812 S. Patterson Blvd. in Dayton -- and yes, it’s open on Sundays. Kramer’s, 1018 Irving Ave. in Dayton, captured second place, while Joe’s Pizzeria at 4313 Airway Road in Dayton placed third.
This year’s winner in the “Best Craft Beer Selection” category was Ollie’s Place, at 518 Miamisburg-Centerville Rd. in Washington Twp. The shop has a mammoth retail beer selection, and next door at its bar/restaurant, it also has a mammoth selection of beers on tap available for take out in 64-ounce growlers and 32-ounce howlers. Warped Wing Brewing Company and Dayton Beer Company, which sell their own packaged beers but are mostly providers of beer on tap, placed second and third in the category.
It’s not ALL about beer during the big game. Wine enthusiasts can be football fans, too, so make sure you’re well-stocked. The winner of our “Best Wine Selection (retail)” was Arrow Wine & Spirits (two locations), while second was Dorothy Lane Market (three locations). The third place winner, Jerardi’s Little Store, is not open on Sundays.
