NEWTON TWP., Miami County — A 16-year-old Covington boy was killed on Sunday, Nov. 15, in a two-vehicle crash at Ohio 48 and Sugar Grove Road, county officials said.

Robert D. Lyle was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, which was reported at 3:09 p.m., according to Miami County sheriff’s deputy Mike Marion.

Lyle’s passenger, Zachary Baumgardner, 16, of Newberry Twp., was transported by helicopter to Miami Valley Hospital, Marion said. Baumgardner was listed in serious condition in intensive care on Monday, Nov. 16.

Lyle’s 1994 Pontiac Grand Am was eastbound on Sugar Grove Road. It pulled into the path of a 2003 Ford Ranger southbound on Ohio 48.

The pickup truck’s driver, Tammy Newman, 44, of Laura, was treated at Upper Valley Medical Center near Troy and released.

Lyle and Baumgardner were wearing seat belts, Marion said.
