DAYTON — A 12-year-old boy riding his bicycle was hit and killed by an unlicensed driver Saturday evening, June 13.
Police say the boy, whose name has not yet been released, was riding his bike in the 300 block of Elmhurst Avenue at about 7:15 p.m., off West Third Street in Dayton, when a white Buick with two men tried to pass a vehicle on the wrong side of the street at a high rate of speed.
“The boy was dragged about 35 feet — he was killed instantly,” said Lt. Brian Johns of the Dayton Police Department.
The men in the Buick left the scene but returned a short time later; the driver — who did not have a valid license and was on probation for gun crimes, Johns said — will be charged in the boy’s death, but police have yet to release his name. It was not known whether the passenger in the car would be charged.
The car belonged to the driver’s girlfriend, who Johns said was in custody and will be charged with the crime of allowing an unlicensed driver to drive her vehicle, though she was not involved in the accident.
