DAYTON —The jobs of the unit that processes the change of addresses for the United States Postal Service’s mail processing plant on East Fifth Street in Dayton will be consolidated into the operations of the Columbus mail processing plant.
It’s unclear when the move of the Postal Automated Redirection System unit will take place, said David Van Allen, a USPS spokesman. “The automated part is getting more sophisticated,” he said. Thus, resulting in less people needed to the job.
The move will affect 14 postal employees, who will be assigned to other jobs at the Dayton site, Van Allen said.
The change comes in the wake of the USPS study that involves the possible closure of approximately 3,600 post office locations. There are six Dayton-area branches that employ roughly 100 people on the U.S. Postal Service closure list, including locations in Jefferson Twp., Trotwood and Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. No more branches will close until at least May 2012 under a moratorium that will give Congress time to consider alternatives.
“If that processing plant, which is still under study, is approved, no jobs can move until May 15,” Van Allen said of the Dayton processing plant.
