WASHINGTON TWP., Montgomery County — Two men who died in a fiery single-car crash early Sunday morning on Mad River Road were University of Dayton students from China.

The Montgomery County Coroner’s office said their identities have not yet been confirmed, but a UD announcement issued Monday afternoon said both students have been identified as 19-year-old Hanquing Wu, an electrical engineering major from Suzhou and 18-year-old Zhongyi Xu, a civil engineering major from Nanjing.

It was not immediately clear who drove the black Mitsubishi that crashed on Mad River at Jenny Lane. Initial reports suggest that the car was northbound on Mad River before it veered off the right side of the road, struck a tree and burst into flames, according to the Montgomery County Sheriff’s office.

Both Hanqing Wu and Zhongyi Xu were trapped, and later pronounced dead at the scene, at 12:15 a.m. Sunday, according to the coroner’s office.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation.

Students, faculty and staff will come together for prayer and support between 3 and 7 p.m. today in the Kennedy Union Ballroom, according to the UD announcement.

Three Chinese natives studying at Urbana University were killed in March 2007 when a Chevy Tahoe, traveling at 98 mph, slammed into several cars stopped at a red light on Urbana and Moorefield roads in Clark County.

Jin “Jack” Bian, 27, Yan “Zoe” Sun and Bing “Jo” Xue, both 24, were graduate students at Urbana. Jason Skaggs, 37, was found guilty in 2008 on three counts of aggravated vehicular homicide and two counts of aggravated vehicular assault. He was sentenced to 34 years in prison.
