DAYTON — A break-in at WHIO-TV’s transmission tower on Germantown Street temporarily silenced radio station K99.1 early Monday.

Dayton police said they arrested two men and were looking for a third after the suspects apparently tried to sell thousands of dollars of stolen station equipment at a scrap yard.

“I got a call at 6:17 a.m. that K99 was off the air,” chief radio engineer Benny Spitler said. He went to check the tower and found the gate down and the back door open.

Police said the thieves broke through the fence surrounding the tower and used a crowbar to pry their way into the building at the tower’s base.

They grabbed computers, printers and the K99.1 transmitter, loaded their truck and drove to A & B Iron and Metal on Washington Street to sell the equipment for scrap, police said.

Employees noticed WHIO and Cox logos all over the stolen items and called police.
