YELLOW SPRINGS — A new, independent Antioch College will be created on Friday, Sept. 4.
The final documents establishing a new college in Yellow Springs will be signed Friday by representatives of Antioch University and the Antioch College Continuation Corporation, according to the Great Lakes College Association (GLCA).
The agreement will transfer the historic college campus and other assets from the university to the new college board.
The documents will be signed at a public ceremony at 5 p.m. Friday on the Antioch College campus in Yellow Springs. The ceremony will be held on the lawn located in the horseshoe drive on Livermore Street.
“The process to create an independent Antioch College has been a long and challenging one, but everyone involved in this effort was committed to the goal of creating an independent college, leaving the university free to focus on its predominately graduate programs which are located in four states,” said Richard Detweiler, president of the GLCA, which has been mediating the negotiations.
“There is a high level of energy and excitement as the board of Antioch College moves forward with the process of reopening the college,” Detweiler said.
The deal to revive Antioch College announced in June included an Aug. 31 deadline for the closing and transfer of assets from the university to the corporation. The deadline was extended to allow more time to accommodate required reviews and approvals by external agencies, including state officials and the university’s bond holders, according to GLCA officials.
Antioch College closed in June 2008 because of declining enrollment and other issues.
