KETTERING — About 200 people gathered Sunday afternoon to pray for an end to abortions, joining Catholic Archbishop Dennis Schnurr as he prayed the rosary in front of the Dayton Women’s Health Center on Stroop Road.

The gathering is part of a national 40 Days for Life campaign, which ends Oct. 31, and includes fasting, vigils and outreach along with an emphasis on prayer, said Mary Britt, core committee member for the effort.

“We have to pray to end abortion. That’s the only way it’s going to happen,” said Lois Depp, 64, of Centerville.

Afterward, Schnurr said he was pleased to see people come together in a prayerful and peaceful manner in the effort to end abortion.

“The most important thing that takes place here is the prayer,” said Schnurr, who heads the Cincinnati Archdiocese. “But at the same time we want to urge the public to think about what we are doing as a society by destroying those who are the future.”

During brief remarks after he finished praying the rosary, Schnurr urged the audience members to continue praying — for those “scarred by abortion,” as well as those “who fail to see the evil of abortion.”

Britt asked people to sign or pass petitions urging the Ohio Legislature to pass a law outlawing late term abortions.

The Dayton Daily News reported last week that induced abortions in Ohio declined for the 10th straight year, from 38,140 in 2000 to 28,721 in 2009.
