TIPP CITY — Phil Nagle, the 23-year-old Tipp City resident who is planning an epic bike ride to raise money to fight cancer, has postponed his 8,000-mile, record-setting trip to raise a little more money.

Nagle, who graduated from the University of Cincinnati’s architectural engineering program last month, plans to ride through all of the lower 48 states in 48 days and raise $48,000 for the Lymphoma and Leukemia Society. But Nagel said Monday, July 6, his original start date, that he and his two-man crew need to raise another $4,000 to cover RV rental, food and gas.

He’s now planning to leave Tipp City on Monday, July 20, at 8 a.m. If he makes the trip even close to his goal, he’ll be in the Guinness Book of World Records.

“We wanted to try and play it safe before we head out on the road,” Nagle said.

Nagle is planning a couple fundraisers next week: a dinner and a pancake breakfast, and he’s asking for support through his Web site, www.go48in48.com. The page has a link for donating to the leukemia cause, and a Paypal link further down the page to donate to the trip.

“That would be awesome if we could get some extra help that way,” Nagle said.

Details on the fund raisers will also be posted on the site, he said.

Nagle said it’s been more difficult than he anticipated to raise money.

“There have been a lot of hurdles with getting funding right now,” he said. “A lot of companies are struggling with the status of the economy.”

But, he said, training is going well, and he has all the equipment he needs for the trip, including a trailer loaded with gear.

“I’m feeling really good,” Nagle said. “We’re so close. We just need that extra little push.”
