DAYTON — Officers arrested a man today in connection with a fatal shooting over money in August.
Tyree Parson, 24, was taken from Public Safety Building to the Montgomery County Jail about 10:45 a.m. after being arrested in connection with the shooting of Dequan Smith, 34.
In a soft voice, Parson told reporters he did not want to speak about the killing.
Friends dropped Smith off at Good Samaritan Hospital around 1:15 a.m. Aug. 13 after Smith was shot on Dorham Place, just south of Kings Highway in West Dayton. Sgt. Dan Mauch, head of the homicide unit, said Smith was shot in the leg, the bullet severing a major artery.
“He bled out,” Mauch said.
Dayton police issued an arrest warrant for Parson shortly after the shooting after witnesses identified him as the shooter. “He was on the run. He knew we were looking for him,” the sergeant said. Thursday morning, acting on new information, Dayton police and the Southern Ohio Fugitive Apprehension Strike Force of the U.S. Marshal’s Office found Parson at a home in the 200 block of Niagara Avenue.
Mauch said Smith and Parson knew each other and were arguing over a debt. That argument escalated into the shooting. Mauch declined to reveal any further details.
He did say that authorities would be looking into whether harboring a fugitive charges should be filed against unnamed persons. Mauch said it appeared that Parson had left the area for a period of time before returning to the Miami Valley.
According to court and prison records, Parson served a 2-year sentence on drug and weapons convictions and was released in February.
