DAYTON — Two large art works created with help from area high school students will be installed Monday, May 17, at the Dayton International Airport.
The pieces were produced last year as part of the Blue Sky Project, a summer artist-in-residence program at the University of Dayton.
Two of the 2009 resident artists, Katherine Mann of Washington, D.C. and Lisa Nonken of Chicago, are returning to install their works as part of the city of Dayton’s “Art at the Airport” program.
Mann’s “Byzantine” is a wall-sized painting made from a series of panels. Nonken’s “Dayton Flight” sculpture features airplanes made from the pages of the Dayton Daily News. Both works were made in collaboration with six to seven area youth participants.
Founded in 2004 in a Chicago suburb, the Blue Sky Project brings together five contemporary artists from around the world, five college arts interns, and 30 to 40 area teens to pursue projects proposed by the artists.
The program moved to Dayton in 2009 through a partnership with UD.
Last year’s participating schools included the Dayton Early College Academy, Stivers High School for the Arts and Kettering Fairmont High School, among others.
The 2010 program runs from June 14-Aug. 5 at UD. This year’s final exhibition is Aug. 5-7 at the Armory, 201 E. Sixth St., in Dayton’s Oregon District.
Applications for students ages 14-18 are available at www.blueskydayton.org.
