WEST CHESTER TWP. — Flags were flown at half staff Sunday on the House side of the Capitol in honor of an aide killed Saturday during a shooting in Tucson, Ariz., that injured a congresswoman and killed a federal judge.
Speaker John Boehner spoke briefly at his West Chester Twp. administrative offices Sunday, calling for prayers for all involved in the “senseless” shooting in Arizona that injured 14 and killed six people, including congressional aide Gabe Zimmerman, 30.
Among those injured was Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, D-Arizona, who had been meeting with constituents at a supermarket when a 22-year-old man identified as Jared Loughner shot her in the head.
“An attack on one who serves is an attack on all who serve,” Boehner said. “Such acts of violence have no place in our society.”
Boehner said he has alerted FBI Director Robert Mueller that Congress “stands ready to assist in any way possible.”
Normal business in the House, he said, would be postponed so members could take necessary action regarding the shooting, and the majority leader would revise the schedule.
“Public service is a high honor, but these tragic events remind us that all of us in our roles in service to our fellow citizens comes with a risk,” Boehner said. “This inhuman act should not, and will not, deter us from our calling to represent our constituents and to fulfill our oaths of office. No act, no matter how heinous, must be allowed to stop us from our duties.”
