Bridges, bikeways among local project proposals up for review

A new list of 41 proposed transportation projects totaling more than $45 million was unveiled Thursday afternoon for public review by the Miami Valley Regional Planning Commission.

The project applications were submitted by more than a dozen governments and agencies in the Dayton region in an annual review process, and will undergo analysis that ranks and scores the projects to see which will get funding, said Paul Arnold, a regional planner for the MVRPC.

The commission will have about $19 million in federal funds for the projects in state fiscal year 2015, Arnold said.

The applications include several high-budget projects such as:

  • $4.4 million to replace the Broadway Street Bridge over Wolf Creek in Dayton.
  • $5.7 million to reconstruct County Road 25A in Piqua.
  • $3.7 million to repair and resurface the Trotwood Connector from Third Street to North Salem Avenue.

Those and 16 other mostly large projects are vying $35.5 million in Surface Transportation Program money, the largest of three pots the commission will be doling out.

A number of projects have also applied for two funding programs aimed at reducing congestion and air pollution, and enhancing transportation corridors, which together are allocated about $10 million.

Among those are:

  • The Southeast Bikeway Corridor in both Dayton and Kettering that would extend the Iron Horse Trail from Centerville to Irving Avenue, just south of the University of Dayton. The two projects come to a little more than $2 million.
  • A “neighborhood connector project” that would create bikeways in Piqua along Garnsey and Commercial streets for about $625,000.
  • A downtown Xenia streetscape project that would cost about $480,000.

Project descriptions can be found at www.mvrpc.org. Written comments can be mailed to the commission in care of Paul Arnold by regular mail or be e-mail at parnold@mvrpc.org. The deadline for public comments is Nov. 16.

The project list is scheduled for approval by the MVRPC board next March, Arnold said.
