TRENTON — The city is the chosen site of a pilot restaurant for new menu items being reintroduced by the third generation of a family-run business.

The restaurant now called Cassano’s and London Bobby Fish and Chips held a grand opening on Thursday at its much larger location at 715 E. State St., which is about 200 feet away from the previous Cassano’s Pizza & Subs at 6439 Oxford State Road.

The 2,400-square-foot eatery will feature a flat screen television that customers can watch while waiting on their orders, a pickup order window, dine-in seating capacity of 48 compared to the previous 25, and the sale of Miller beer products to support the local economy, said Victor “Chip” Cassano III, the chairman and chief executive of Cassano’s.

“The place we had was just old and tired and it needed to be remodeled. We were there for 40 years so it was pretty much worn out,” he said.

“The new place, we added a new concept that the Cassano’s had in the 1970s. We had a London Bobby Fish and Chips and so we were able to add that onto the menu. We will have fish and chips along with Cassano’s pizza.”

The restaurant will continue to offer its traditional thin crust pizza along with beer-battered fish, Cassano said. For $6.99, he said customers can purchase a three-piece fish dinner or a torpedo meal with two pieces of fried fish in hot dog buns served with tartar sauce and lettuce, coleslaw, two hush puppies and a choice of onion strings, steak fries or fresh fried cut chips.

Cassano said his brother, Chris, vice president of the company, and he decided to bring London Bobby Fish and Chips back — that was one of the brands his late grandfather, Victor “Vic” Cassano Sr., created when he founded the company.

“We did it in the past and it was very successful, and history seems to repeat itself. We had a good loyal following for that brand so we decided to try its application to see of it would work out,” he said.

If the fish and chips fare is successful in Trenton, Chip Cassano said the company will roll it into other locations.

“Overall, it’s been a very good start. Everybody seems to be really enjoying it and we’re selling more fish than we probably thought we would,” he said.

Cassano said a drive-up window has been added at the location so people can call their orders for pick-up without having to get of their vehicles. Also, all menu items are available for delivery.

Cassano’s, based in Kettering, has 34 locations in the region, including two restaurants in Middletown and one each in Monroe, Carlisle and Springboro. There also is a Cassono's restaurant in Fairfield.
