CLAYTON — Caterpillar has jobs — hundreds of them.
Hiring at the 1.5 million-square-foot Caterpillar Logistics Services distribution center off Hoke Road is starting slowly, and will get under way in earnest next month, company officials said last week.
The producer of heavy construction and mining equipment and supplies will hire as many as 600 people for the center, with most prospective employees coming from the Dayton area, said Jason Murphy, human resources manager for the Clayton center.
The first step for jobseekers is to visit www.jointeamcaterpillar
.com, Murphy said. There, applicants will see openings and get information about the company’s hiring process. Even if an immediate opening isn’t seen, those interested can create a profile and upload resumes.
A search on the site late last week showed no openings in Clayton, but Murphy cautioned that users should not expect to see a “flood” of immediate openings. Five hundred to 600 positions will need to be filled, most by local applicants.
“I would be comfortable saying anywhere from 75 to 80 percent (of positions filled) would be from the area,” Murphy said.
Erik Collins, Montgomery County economic development manager, said he expects the county Job Center to assist Caterpillar in finding employees, much as the center did with the Payless Shoe Center in Brookville, which employs more than 300.
“Because this is such a huge operation, they want to be real methodical about this,” Collins said.
There will be jobs in tracking, packing and shipping, operating forklifts and more, said Linda Fairbanks, a Caterpillar spokeswoman. There will also be supervisors, as well as administrative or maintenance positions. About 70 percent to 80 percent of openings will be “warehouse associates,” who deal with hundreds of thousands of parts, she said.
