SPRINGBORO — With traffic counts at the Austin Boulevard interchange already at 85 percent of 2035 projections, Springboro City Manager Chris Thompson said the continuous- flow intersection at Austin and Ohio 741 was malfunctioning.
Officials recently approved a contract for $1.6 million in landscaping around the interchange, opened last year after $22 million in construction.
So far, a Kohl’s department store and two office buildings have opened east of the interchange. Within two years, three parking garages, a shopping village, apartments and a multiplex theater complex are among the developments planned on the northwest corner in Austin Landing.
Earlier this month, transportation officials acknowledged engineers underestimated traffic counts used to design the intersection, however no data has been provided.
An engineering firm has been hired by the Ohio Department of Transportation to measure traffic and proposed changes to improve traffic flow.
