URBANA — A 12-year-old boy was struck by a truck on his way to the school bus stop shortly before 7 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 15.
Jason Brightman, of 405 Louden St., was first taken to Mercy Memorial Hospital in Urbana then transferred by squad to Children’s Medical Center in Dayton.
He remained in the hospital in fair condition on Thursday afternoon, according to a hospital spokeswoman.
People on the scene observed Brightman alert and talking after being struck.
He was in an alley in the 200 block of Pindar Street when a 1991 Chevrolet 1500 pick-up truck struck him. The boy was on his way to a school bus stop about half a block away from where the accident took place, Urbana Police Sgt. John Puriton said.
The driver, Paul Vanhoose, 48, of 110 Evans Ave., didn’t realize he had struck the boy at first and dragged him “several feet.” The area was dark and it was raining at the time. The boy was wearing all dark clothing, Puriton said.
Vanhoose, who was on his way to work, stopped after he realized what had happened. It did not appear that he was speeding, Puriton said.
The police consulted with the prosecutor and determined that no charges will be filed, Lt. Matt Lingrell said.
“We can’t determine that any real violation occurred,” he said.
