DAYTON — A steady flow of people came to the Dayton command of the Salvation Army on Monday, Nov. 9, to sign up for Christmas food assistance.

Major Tom Duperree estimated several hundred had already come through by 11 a.m. on the first day applications were being taken at the charity’s 138 S. Wilkinson Street building.

Inside the gymnasium, volunteers collected information from those seeking the aid. Duperree said things were running smoothly because they brought in several more volunteers than usual, anticipating there could be a large turnout due to the economic downturn.

Last year on the first day, 1,100 families applied.

“We haven’t seen as many this morning,” he said.

Applications for the food assistance will be taken through noon today and again from 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday, as well as during those times on Nov. 16 and 17.

Working applicants may apply from 5 to 7 p.m. on Nov. 16 only.

Applicants must bring a photo ID of each adult in the household; Social Security or medical card for each child; proof of income and address.
