Clyo Road extension project may not hit its deadline

SUGARCREEK TWP. — Paving was scheduled to start this week on the Clyo Road extension project, but contractors and county officials say the road might not be completed by the Nov. 30 project deadline.

Greene County Engineer Bob Geyer said a rainy fall delayed contractors’ efforts on the site. Dayton’s southern suburbs received 5.5 inches of rain in October, more than double the average amount.

Much of the preparation is finished, from utility work, to grading and building the road base and also widening the existing Possum Run Road base up to Feedwire Road.

Site managers for Kelchner Excavating, the lead contractor on the project, said the actual paving of the road should take about a week if the weather isn’t too rainy or cold. Striping, signage and other jobs would follow.

Geyer said he was not sure if the road would open by Nov. 30, and Kelchner officials said they might be able to hit that date if the weather is excellent for the rest of the month.

Clyo Road currently dead-ends at the Sugarcreek Twp. police and fire station, just east of Wilmington Pike.

The extension will connect it to Possum Run and Feedwire, giving emergency responders much quicker access to the northern and eastern parts of the township.

When the road opens, it will have one lane in each direction, plus a landscaped median/turn lane. Sugarcreek Twp. hopes to begin the second phase of the project in 2010, adding a second lane in each direction.

The project is bordered by both Centerville and Sugarcreek Twp., and both jurisdictions are eager to see commercial development along the road extension.

Would like to hear from the contractors as what is going on. This story was written on the 19th of November. They stated that the MIGHT not hit the deadline, especially if it rained. They knew darn well they were not going to hit it.

As I'm not an expert in road construction, I would be extremely interested in hearing why they are unable to complete the road even remotely on time and why they can not open the road when the lines have been painted and signs posted.

The road is DONE. The lines are painted. It is still closed. Last night, I drove around the barrels and drove on the road. There were 2 cops sitting at the "closed" entrance to my neighborhood off of Possum Run. I turned around, drove back out and took the detour that adds 2 miles to my drive. The cops didn't follow me. So now the road is closed and we are paying cops to monitor it when there is crime occurring elsewhere? BRILLIANT! Fire everyone involved in the planning of this project. Stat.

The Possum Run section has been closed since June 24. This is RIDICULOUS! The first 2 months, there was almost zero activity on this section and motorists were moving the barrels to avoid an unnecessary detour on a completely functional road that was prematurely closed road. Instead of working on the road, a dirt pile was dumped in the middle to force people to use the detour. Up until November 1, there was no significant work done that required this section of the road to be closed. Pathetic.

Mismanaged project-lacks accountabilty & logic for a phased approach for re-establishing the Possum Run connection to Feedwire prior to total project completion. More work has been accomplished in the last 2 weeks than the last 4 months. An extra 2-3 inches of asphalt needs applied and then it could open. This COULD be accomplished in 2-4 days but probably won’t be because the crews are few in number, aren’t putting in full days and the inconvenience affects mostly Bellbrook residents.

This has been such an aggravation, but the workers have been really, really nice!
