Effective Dec. 1, the fee to license a dog in Montgomery County will increase by $4 a year, going from $16 currently to a rate of $20, according to a release from the Montgomery County Animal Resource Center.
The release said Montgomery County Commissioners approved the increase on Tuesday, Aug. 25, citing “serious budget challenges.”
The release said dog licenses are the major source of funding for the Animal Resource Center, which provides animal control services, runs a pet adoption program and cares for stray and lost animals.
“We are faced with very serious budget challenges as we approach the new year; however, we will continue to provide the quality services our citizens have come to know,” said Montgomery County Animal Resource
Center Director Mark Kumpf in a statement Tuesday night. “This was a difficult decision for our commissioners, especially in these tough economic times.”
