Covington students miss classmate killed in crash

COVINGTON — Robert D. Lyle “was a quiet, hard-working student, who’s going to be greatly missed by the students and staff,” said Covington High School Principal Jason Haak Monday, Nov. 16.

The 16-year-old Covington High School sophomore was killed Sunday when the car he was driving pulled into the path of a pickup truck headed south on Ohio 48.

Students at the high school had each other, grief counselors, and staff and clergy to lean on Monday, Haak said.

Lyle’s passenger, Zachary Baumgardner, 16, of Newberry Twp., was transported by helicopter to Miami Valley Hospital. Baumgardner was listed in fair condition in intensive care in the afternoon of Monday, Nov. 16.

The pickup truck’s driver, Tammy Newman, 44, of Laura, was treated at upper Valley Medical Center near Troy and released Sunday.

Haak said Lyle “had aspirations of attending Upper Valley Joint Vocational School. Like most high school students he was still exploring different options. He was an extremely hard worker and would spend time before and after school to achieve his goals. He talked often of wanting to see some of the career technical fields.”

Haak said he found out a lot about Lyle by talking with his peers Monday, including, “what a good friend that he was that they could easily talk to and enjoy being around. A quiet kid, he was always polite and worked hard in his classes.”

Haak said Lyle attended Covington Middle School and had attended the high school since he was a freshman.
