DAYTON — Jane Howington, Dayton’s assistant city manager for operations, has been offered the job of city manger in Kalispell, Montana.
Kalispell’s Interim City Manager Myrt Webb said the offer was made about noon today, Tuesday, June 23. Howington is expected to give the Kalispell City Council her response on Wednesday.
Howington said she knew that Kalispell city officials had offered the position to someone else and the renewed interest in her as a job candidate came as a surprise.
Webb said the Kalispell City Commission met on Monday, June 22, after being unable to come to terms with another candidate.
“The commission had an absolute consensus that Jane Howington was the best candidate,” Webb said.
Howington plans to review the offer with her family, then discuss her options with Dayton City Manager Rashad Young.
“My response may be “yes” or “no” or maybe I’ll say the offer doesn’t meet my needs and I’ll counter,” Howington said. “I’m dedicated to the city of Dayton and feel like I could still be of value here.”
Howington joined the city of Dayton staff in 2007, after serving as the city manager of Oxford, Ohio for seven years. She earns $119,600 annually to oversee the operations of the city’s police, fire, water, public works and the recreation and youth services departments. She also is Dayton’s director of human resources.
“Assistant city manager for operations isn’t a glamorous job,” Howington said. “My job is to make the operations function more efficiently, to see if we can provide services at a more cost effective rate.”
Kalispell, population 20,000, is located in northwest Montana at the gateway of Glacier National Park, a hiker’s paradise with more than 700 miles of trails. Howington said her family frequently visits national parks and, she has causally been watching for job openings in Kalispell since 1991.
“I wasn’t actively looking for another job,” she said.
