KETTERING — After residents reported seeing a deer shot with an arrow near Kettering Medical Center early Tuesday, Nov. 24, authorities haven’t found it.

Residents in Kettering reported seeing a deer shot with an arrow and last seen in the area of Dorothy Lane and Southern Boulevard about 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, Reports said the deer was headed toward the Kettering Medical Center, Kettering Police Dispatcher J. Kelley said.

Judy Kohl, community services director for Kettering (animal control officer), said a police officer patrolled the area for a long while had not sighted the deer. The Kettering hospital area is wooded and the deer might just go there to die, Kohl said.

If the police find it they would probably try to safely destroy it by shooting it so it would not have to suffer, she said. The carcass would go to someone on their waiting list who would take the animal for the venison it yields, she said.

“You’re not allowed to hunt in Kettering,” she said, even though it is bow hunting season.

If the person who shot the deer did it illegally and is found, the Ohio Wildlife Division would investigate.

Kohl said she rides her horse in the Sugarcreek Reserve and has come across a buck occasionally. At this time of year they can be very aggressive, she said.

“The buck was probably on the trail for a female and was seeing us as a challenge,” she said.

Deer are frequently out this time of year because it’s mating season, Kelley said. They’re often in the roadways more than usual, he said.

He said the reports of the deer make it “sound like its going to be okay and that maybe the arrow just grazed it,” since it appears to be traveling some distance.

Many counties have reported car-deer crashes in recent weeks.
