Dayton Public Schools officials today will celebrate the completion of a $627 million construction program with the dedication of the last of 26 new schools.
The dedication will occur at Wright Brothers PreK-8 School, which opened to students and staff on Wednesday.
State and local officials, past and present school leaders, parents and others will gather for the 3 p.m. ceremony at the 1361 Huffman Ave. school.
District officials say this marks the completion of the decade-long effort that began with voters approving a $245 million bond issue in November 2002.
The state provided 61 percent of the project cost and the bond issue provided the 39 percent local share for what district officials call a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to revitalize the district.
John Carr, the district’s chief construction officer, said it’s been a lot of hard work, but the payoff is worth it.
“I think we’ve got some nice buildings to rejuvenate and help some neighborhoods,” he said. “I think the program is definitely going to be an asset not only for the community but for the kids.”
District spokeswoman Jill Moberley said the buildings are technology-rich with greater computer access for teachers and students. They’re also green, designed to reduce operation and management costs, use energy and water more efficiently and provide a healthier indoor environment for students and staff.
Edison PreK-8 School and Meadowdale High School have earned gold LEED (Leadership in Environmental Engineering and Design) certification and the other nine schools in the project’s third and final construction segment also are on track to earn that designation.
Belmont auction
An auction to sell remaining furnishings and other items from the former Belmont High School will be Saturday, Jan. 14.
It will take place at the old Belmont at 2323 Mapleview Ave. (behind the new Belmont) at 10 a.m., with a preview starting at 8 a.m.
Belmont students and staff moved into the new school in late November.
