TIPP CITY— Firefighters suspect an electrical problem started a Sunday evening fire in a downtown building that caused an estimated $60,000 in damage.

Fire Chief Steve Kessler said Monday, July 27, that firefighters soon hope to have an official cause of the fire in the first block of East Main Street. The fire was reported around 8 p.m.

The fire was reported as being in the building housing the chamber of commerce, but actually was in the next building east.

The damaged building was used by Tipp City artist Sally Watson for her pottery studio.

Smoke from the fire got into the building housing Benkin & Co. downstairs and a recently opened Studio 14 Benkin Gallery of Fine Art on the second floor. Evelyn Staub, studio owner, said Monday the building had a “strong smoke odor,” but did not appear to have any damage.

Firefighters from West Milton, Casstown and New Carlisle were called to help at the fire scene.

Kessler said it was fortunate someone saw the fire and called 9-1-1. A large fire in one of the older buildings downtown “is a major concern” of the fire department, he said.
