BEAVERCREEK — Well, we’ve learned one more thing about the Terpennings. They all like to read.

Just hours after the Beavercreek family was surprised with a knock at the door from “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition,” the phone rang at Books & Co. at The Greene.

A woman who identified herself as Heather Hazelwood from the popular television show was calling to ask if the bookstore might be willing to donate books for the family’s new home.

“She said the family was very big into reading, and the team wanted to fill their home with books,” said the store’s director of public relations, Sharon Kelly Roth. “It seemed like a great idea to us!”

The family has four children: Josselyn, 6; twin boys Justin and Jacob, 2; and Joshua, 1. James Terpenning’s adopted brother, Joseph, who has cerebral palsy, also lives with the family. Both men are in wheelchairs.

Connie Sheaffer, general manager at the store, said specialists in various book departments will be selecting books for every family member in the next few days. Then, the books will be shipped in from the company warehouse in Alabama.

She said the TV team wants books everywhere – from the parents’ bedroom to the living room coffee table.

Specific requests included hobby books for mom Shannon on cross-stitching, stamp and coin collecting, and books on water sports such as scuba diving and water skiing for James. Books on country music were also on the list.

Sheaffer says the store will be donating dozens of books.

“We’ll do whatever they want,” Roth said.

The family’s house will be demolished Aug. 1 and the home will be completed by Aug. 6 when they return.
