The heroic efforts of a Vectren Energy of Ohio employee, who saved a man’s life after he fell into a ravine in July, has resulted in the city receiving a $2,500 grant from the utility company.
Galen Young and Vectren Energy today will present Fairborn Chief Mike Riley the check during an 11:30 a.m. ceremony at the Fairborn Government Center, 44 W. Hebble Ave.
Riley said the fire department plans to use the money for their smoke detector and carbon monoxide program.
In July, Young was on the job when he saw an elderly motorist experiencing severe difficulties driving his car. The man got out of his car, staggered erratically before abandoning it in a vacant parking lot. Before Young could reach him, the man fell into a deep ravine and was lying face down in it.
Galen is trained in first aid at work and called for 911. Public safety personnel from West Carrollton responded and were able to rescue the man and take him to the hospital, where he spent four days.
Vectren Energy awarded Young its Meritorious Service Award for $2,500, which required him to select a nonprofit emergency responder organization to receive the monetary award.
Since Young attends church with two Fairborn firefighters/EMT personnel, J.P. Wilson and Sheri Wilson, he selected them and the Fairborn fire department to receive the money.
