MIAMI TWP., Montgomery County — The FBI is expected to take custody today of a letter mailed last week to a local business.
“We’re taking custody of it for investigative purposes,” Mike Brooks, a special agent with the FBI in Cincinnati, said Monday.
Miami Twp. police began investigating the letter that was received on Feb. 9 by a local business. Authorities have declined to identify the local recipient.
“It appears to be an issue of domestic terrorism,” said Major John DiPietro, the township’s deputy police chief. “We’re not aware of any danger to any persons as a result of this letter.”
Police suspect the letter was sent to similar businesses around the country.
“It looks like there would be multiple targets,” DiPietro said.
In addition to the FBI, DiPietro said he has been working with inspectors from the U.S. Postal Service; Ohio Homeland Security, a division of the Ohio Department of Public Safety; and the FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force, a partnership of U.S. law enforcement agencies charged with handling terrorist threats.
“We’re just dealing with a threat. We’re not dealing with any action that has occurred,” DiPietro said.
