DAYTON — The female passenger injured in a motorcycle accident Friday night, March 19, died Saturday morning at Miami Valley Hospital.

The passenger on the motorcycle, Shauntel Evans of Dayton, was taken to the hospital Friday in critical condition, said Lt. Brian Johns of the Dayton Police Department.

Evans was pronounced dead at 10 a.m. Saturday, according to a hospital spokeswoman.

The Montgomery County Coroner’s Office identified Johnny Payton, 27, of Dayton as the man killed Friday in the accident that left a motorcycle engulfed in flames.

An autopsy on Payton was expected Saturday, a coroner’s investigator said. Results would not be available for 10 to 12 weeks, according to the coroner’s office.

The single-motorcycle accident happened about 10:45 p.m. Friday on Danner Avenue near Richley Avenue in the city’s southwest side. Payton went off the road and hit a tree, Johns said.

“We pulled up and one motorcycle was engulfed in flames,” witness Davidda Knight said.

A group of motorcyclists were with Payton when he crashed. “There were some riders with him that tried to help save him after the crash, but were unsuccessful,” Johns said.

The accident is under investigation. Police are looking at speed, alcohol and driver error as possible factors, but no cause has yet been determined, Johns said.
