TROY — Firefighters are sorting through the rubble at World Wide Junk Dealers and Recycling following a Sunday, April 26 fire that caused an estimated $200,000 in loss to buildings and materials.
Fire Chief Chris Boehringer said Monday, that firefighters are attempting to determine the cause of the fire at 663 S. Union St. that sent clouds of black smoke over the city.
The state fire marshal’s office has been contacted for assistance, Boehringer said.
Business owner Mike Hoagland said the cinder block building located next to the CSX railroad line through town was filled with plastic as were a couple of semi trailers outside.
Boehringer said the “tremendous amount of recyclable plastic” had been shredded and baled in preparation for reuse. Some tires, wood and other materials also caught fire, but the primary material was plastic, he said.
Firefighters from Casstown and Tipp City assisted in fighting the fire, which was reported around 2 p.m Sunday. The firefighting efforts forced the closing of the CSX line for several hours.
There were no injuries in fighting the fire. Boehringer said firefighters were hampered by strong winds and initial concerns with water pressure. Adjustments made at the water treatment plant “and we were able to get our job done,” he said.
