TROY — A former teacher’s aide in the Vandalia-Butler schools pleaded no contest to felony pandering obscenity involving a minor Monday, June 1, in Miami County Common Pleas Court.

Police said the charges stemmed from child pornography found on a computer formerly belonging to David Pottenger, 46, of Troy, sold at a garage sale south of Troy.

The woman who bought the computer found the child pornography and notified authorities, Troy Police Capt. Joe Long said.

Pottenger waived a county grand jury’s consideration of allegations against him, pleaded no contest and was found guilty.

Vandalia schools Superintendent Christy Donnelly said the district contracted with the Miami County Educational Services Center for aide services. The center was notified the day after Pottenger’s arrest that he could no longer work in the district, she said.

John Decker, superintendent of the educational services center, said Pottenger had worked as a teacher’s aide for the center since November 2005.

Pottenger has been on unpaid administrative leave. With the plea in court Monday, the services center will notify its lawyer and the Ohio Department of Education for a decision on Pottenger’s job status, Decker said.

Pottenger was released on his own recognizance in April on the condition he had no contact with minors nor access to computers. The bond was continued Monday.
