CENTERVILLE — Part of an hour-long television special to be aired this fall will be filmed from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, July 14, at Graeter’s Ice Cream, 2 N. Main St.

Special guests will be retired greyhounds eating “Frosty Paws,” an ice cream created for dogs, at an ice cream social for greyhounds and their owners.

The public is welcome to come for a “meet and greet” with the greyhounds, said Stephanie Florence, a spokeswoman for Nestle Purina.

The greyhounds and high school teacher Helen Johnson, director of events for the Queen City (Cincinnati) Greyhound Connection in Ohio, will be featured in the television special being produced by Blind Squirrels Production Group, Inc., of Cincinnati, and sponsored by Nestle Purina and Kroger.

Johnson owns two retired greyhounds and fosters countless others, Florence said. The Queen City Greyhound Connection’s mission is to make sure every pet has a home, she said.

Tuesday’s filming is part of the “Tales for the Pet Lover’s Heart” campaign, an integrated program centered on the theme that people and pets make better lives together, Florence said.

The campaign’s goal is to raise awareness and funds for animal welfare organizations, she said.

In 2009, Purina and Kroger plan to contribute $150,000 to animal welfare organizations around the country to help them feed pets in their care until they find homes, she said. In last year’s campaign they contributed $100,000.

Johnson “is one of only seven stories that will be featured in the national ‘Tales for the Pet Lover’s Heart’ television special,” Florence said. For more info on the campaign and future postings about the TV special, check the Web site www.TalesForThePetLoversHeart.com.
