DAYTON — Talks are still ongoing about moving the Greyhound bus terminal out of downtown Dayton, and possibly to the Greater Dayton Regional Transit Authority hub in Trotwood.
“I’d say it’s not off the table,” said RTA Executive Director Mark Donaghy. “We don’t have a time-frame at the moment. It could happen this year.”
RTA would run the terminal and possibly create a connection with the Dayton airport, Donaghy said. RTA has earmarked $782,000 to renovate the Trotwood hub for Greyhound if the move occurs.
He said he is in discussions with Greyhound officials, and that generally “they are favorable” to the idea.
Greyhound spokewoman Abby Wambaugh confirmed the discussions but said no decision has been made. Greyhound’s lease at the city’s transit center, 111 E. Fifth St., expires in December 2010, said Tom Biedenharn, city spokesman.
Greyhound’s Dayton Agent Paul Lindner said the Greyhound terminal is not on drawings he’s seen showing city plans for redeveloping the area around the Oregon District and he believes the city wants Greyhound out. He said a Trotwood location makes sense for Greyhound’s east-west route along I-70, but the downtown location works well for the north-south route on I-75.
Biedenharn said city officials are confident they can redevelop the spot if Greyhound leaves.
Earlier this month Trotwood residents raised objections to relocating the Greyhound station there.
“I think they do have some conceptions about Greyhound ridership that are not the case at all,” Wambaugh said.
