DAYTON — Montgomery County residents in all high-risk groups for the H1N1 virus can receive the vaccine on Thursday, Nov. 5, at a free clinic at the University of Dayton arena.

Public Health - Dayton and Montgomery County on Monday, Nov. 2, announced the clinic for all targeted groups. Those groups include:

  • Pregnant women.
  • People who live with or provide care for infants under 6 months, including parents, siblings and day care providers.
  • Health care and emergency medical services workers.
  • People ages 6 months through 24 years.
  • People ages 25 through 64 years who have chronic medical conditions such as lung or heart disease, diabetes, or other immuno-compromised conditions that put them at higher risk for influenza-related complications.

The clinic will be held from 2-7 p.m. Thursday or until the vaccine is gone. Both nasal spray and shot vaccines will be available at the start of the clinic. Public Health officials were not yet certain about the number of doses available for the clinic.

Public Health expects to receive 19,000 doses of the vaccine on Tuesday, Nov. 3, according to Bill Wharton, spokesman. The organization plans to use 12,000 doses this week at flu vaccine clinics at area schools.

The remaining doses should be enough for Public Health to do the clinic for targeted groups, Wharton said.

UD Arena is located at 1801 Edwin C. Moses Blvd. Clinic participants should enter parking lot C, the entrance near Welcome Stadium.

Participants at the clinic will be required to complete a flu vaccination consent form, according to Public Health officials. The form is available for download at phdmc.org and also will be available at the clinic. Vaccination consent forms also will be available at Montgomery County public libraries.

Call the health department and they'll explain to you that older adults have some immunity against H1N1 that most do not. Consider yourself lucky.

Have you not been reading the press about this flu? The groups being hardest hit are kids, teenagers and young adults, which is why they are in the priority group. People over the age bracket are getting it, but appear to have not been getting as much of the dangerous side effects as the younger group. In addition, those over a certain age (I have read over 49) have apparently not been getting this nearly as often because they think they were exposed to a similar strain earlier in their lives.

Why are people in the upper age group not getting the vaccine? Do "they" want us to die off, or what? Seems like the older you are the more likely that your immune system is getting worn out, and you are more susceptible to getting stuff like the swine flu. If anyone knows the answer please post it here. Thanks.
