Gas prices at many Dayton-area locations shot up, with DaytonGasPrices.com listing dozens of stations at $2.65 per gallon of regular gas on Thursday morning, Dec. 24.
While a few stations in Dayton and Troy were still being reported at $2.48 or $2.49 Thursday, they were the exception. Several area stations’ prices went up by 20 cents per gallon on Wednesday and Christmas Eve.
According to DaytonGasPrices.com, the Dayton area’s average price rose by six cents Thursday, and by 10 cents in the past week, to $2.62 per gallon.
After a wild 2008 in which gas prices were over $4 in the summer then dropped to about $1.50 at Christmas, prices have been steadier in 2009. They gradually climbed back over $2 in the Dayton area, and the average has bounced between $2.23 and $2.68 for the past six months, according to DaytonGasPrices.com.
Travel group AAA estimated that 28 percent of the U.S. population will travel at least 50 miles from home for Christmas this year, although local AAA officials said they actually expect a travel decrease.
