The seventh American Idol is coming to town, which is probably all that needs to be said.

After all, given the enduring popularity of "American Idol," David Cook is far from being just another number.

But Clark State Community College hopes that idol No. 7 is at least a lucky one.

Cook, the Missouri rocker who won the last season of the hit Fox series, will play May 27 at the Clark State Performing Arts Center's Kuss Auditorium, the college has announced.

"To me it's a big deal. It's a huge deal," said Stuart Secttor, executive director of the center. "We've been trying to get something for young people that has mass appeal. I think this is it. I will continue to look, but I think we nailed it with this one."

Secttor said everything just clicked for Cook to play Springfield, making it the right show at the right price, which seems to rarely happen the hotter an artist is.

While presenters don't usually talk money, Cook's fee was agreeable, Secttor said.

"When you're looking at a Taylor Swift," he said, "you're looking at a quarter of a million dollars."

Cook's post-"Idol" career already is off and running — his self-titled debut album went platinum in February.
