One of the 104 Troy High School students who walked through the school doors every day this school year will drive away today, May 28.
About 2:35 p.m., students with perfect attendance in the past school year will find out who wins a donated 1996 Chevrolet Cavalier. Two seniors, Kinsey Malick and Katey Heffner, have four years of perfect attendance, meaning they’ve never even been tardy.
“That’s a lot of getting up in the mornings. No illness, no senior skip day,” said Jeff Schultz, THS dean of students. “The car drawing makes a difference.”
When the program started, THS had “a handful” of kids each year with perfect attendance, Schultz said. With the car as an incentive, there have been more than 700 students with perfect attendance since 2003, he said.
The car giveaway program was started in 2003, based on a similar idea at Upper Valley JVS in Piqua.
On May 21, the JVS gave away its 16th car to Jacob Thobe of Houston. The 1990 Buick Regal was donated by Paul Sherry Chrysler Dodge & Jeep of Piqua. At the JVS, 71 juniors and seniors had perfect attendance this year.
Arbogast Buick, Pontiac, GMC Truck Inc., located just south of Troy, donates the Troy High car.
“They’ve had a dramatic increase in attendance,” dealership owner Dave Arbogast said Wednesday.
Although the poor economy has forced the business to cut some of its public service, Arbogast said the perfect attendance program “is one we felt we need to continue” to support.
