MASON — The last dinosaur under construction in the Dinosaurs Alive! exhibit opening Thursday at Kings Island caught fire and was quickly extinguished Tuesday evening, park officials said.

The damages were limited to one dinosaur of the total 60 dinosaurs in the world’s largest collection, said park spokesman Don Helbig.

“We don’t know,” he said of the cause. “It just took place during construction.”

The dinosaur was being constructed by a combined crew of park officials and contract workers, he said.

There were no injuries, and the park was closed at the time, Helbig said.

Currently, the park closes at 8 p.m. Mondays to Thursdays until the second week of June, Helbig said.

He said the exhibit will open at 2 p.m. Thursday as planned, and open at 10 a.m. every day thereafter.

The Kings Island Fire Department was the first to respond, followed by personnel from Deerfield Twp. and Mason, he said.

Mason Fire Lt. Mark Gerano said shortly before 9:30 p.m., the fire was under control.

Dinosaurs Alive! features more than 60 life-sized dinosaurs on display, including 56 animatronic models, in an outdoor Jurassic forest setting, according to Kings Island.
