DAYTON — The League of Women Voters seeks volunteer interpreters who speak fluent Russian or Turkish to help with translation services for a delegation of government officials from Azerbaijan coming to Dayton on May 29 for a week.
The event is sponsored by Open World, the National League of Women Voters Civic Hosting Program and the League of Women Voters Greater Dayton Area.
As part of the Open World program, the National League of Women Voter’s Global Democracy Program brings together activists and nongovernmental organizations worldwide in an effort to stress transparency, accountability and good governance in democratic societies.
The Dayton program will focus on accountable governance by introducing the Azerbaijani guests to their American counterparts who provide social services, understanding how those services are funded and how private citizens work with the government in these endeavors.
The Azeri visitors speak limited to no English. The week’s program will include visits to city and county government meetings and priority boards, the Dayton Job Center and Food Bank, Clothes That Work! MVRPC, Board of Elections, Sinclair Community College, Hithergreen Senior Center, Dayton Peace Museum, Dayton Daily News Editorial Board, East End, Kettering Foundation and historical sites including Carillon Park and the Dayton Court House.
Anyone interested in helping with translation throughout the week is invited to contact Susan Hesselgesser at the League office, 228-4041.
