LAURA, Miami County — Preliminary investigation indicates a truck driver veered left of center before striking the car of a 50-year-old Gettysburg man who was killed in the crash Tuesday afternoon, Sept. 22, said Capt. Dave Duchak of the Miami County Sheriff’s office.

Paul J. Campbell was pronounced dead at the scene after his Chevrolet Cavalier was crushed by the truck being driven by Debra S. Scott of Sabina, Duchak said. Scott was transported to Miami Valley Hospital and later released.

The accident happened about 4:20 p.m. on Ohio 571 at Ohio 55, just east of Laura. Duchak said two cars on eastbound Ohio 571 were stopped at the intersection waiting for other vehicles to turn.

Scott came up behind the stopped cars driving a tractor truck with no trailer attached, Duchak said. Preliminary investigation indicates Scott applied her brakes but wasn’t able to stop quickly enough.

The truck rotated counterclockwise and continued rolling across the roads center line and into oncoming traffic. The truck collided with Campbell’s westbound car which then went off the right side of the road, Duchak said.

“Preliminarily, it looks like failure to yield and failure to maintain assured clear distance contributed to this death,” Duchak said.

He said Miami County accident reconstruction specialists will continue their investigation Wednesday, and the sheriff’s office will present evidence to the county prosecutor who will determine if charges will be filed in the case.
